If you are interested in gardening along the Southwest Corridor, you can:

  • Volunteer. Particpate in volunteer days to maintain plants and landscaping. Volunteers transplant, weed, prune and do general clean-up on various days during the spring, summer and fall. Email info@swcpc.org to be added to our email list of volunteers, and/or check this website and our Facebook page for annoucements of volunteer days.

  • Be a Garden Steward. Volunteer to be a steward who takes care of a designated area in the corridor. You can see examples of gardens cared for by volunteers on the Maps page on this website. Email franco@swcpc.org for more information.

  • Connect with the Festival Garden in JP. Volunteers from JP have adopted a SWCP garden near Stony Brook, with a theme of edible gardening, with expectations of produce to share among neighbors. Visit the Google Group for this garden at https://sites.google.com/site/festivalgardenjp/ or email festivalgardenjp@gmail.com for more information and to find out how to volunteer and to join the garden's Google Group/email list.

  • Apply for a Community Garden. Apply for a space in one of the eleven Community Gardens along the corridor. Use the Online Application for Community Gardens to apply.

For Garden Stewards and Volunteers:

Thoughts about Planting: If you have volunteered to maintain one of the gardens in the SWC, you may have empty spots that need replanting. Talk with conservancy board members and other gardeners to think about what to plant. Find out about the original landscape plans to see what was originally envisioned for the space. Find out if there are suitable transplants available from another gardener in the corridor. Emphasize native species, especially any that will do well during dry summer months. Avoid invasive plants by reviewing the invasive plant lists provided here. Take your time and consider the balance of plants in the garden you are working with and make a choice that you and your neighbors will enjoy.

Read about weeds, invasive plants and invasive insects.
